Hard-core MAGAs are riding a wave of enthusiasm for Trump's recent actions

For a while, it seemed like Trump’s presence in and refusal to release the Epstein files could disrupt his support from the MAGA base. Instead, it turns out, MAGA has mostly moved on. Despite the Epstein story remaining prominent in mainstream media, the MAGA groups I monitor aren’t discussing it. Like at all. Out of the top 350 posts, there are two posts about Epstein:

• Comer: Bill Clinton ‘prime suspect’ in Epstein investigation (1 comment)

Instead, they are back to talking about all the ways Trump is “winning”. The most prominent of these wins is immigration.

One thread begins with an article from a right-wing website with the headline, “Foreign-born population has dropped 2.2 million since January”. Note that this article is not about undocumented immigrants; it’s all foreign-born people - students, U.S. citizens, green card holders, etc.

For a while, MAGA made the argument that they weren’t against all immigrants, just the “illegal” ones. “They just need to do it the right way,” was a common line that I heard. They are mostly dropping that pretense now and talking about wanting all immigrants gone, including U.S. citizens (and, in plenty of cases, they also want natural born U.S. citizens gone if they are not white).

Here are some choice replies to the report about the drop in the foreign-born population:

• They have to go back

• I voted for this.

• This means America just got Whiter. Nice.

• It needs to drop to zero... preferably negative numbers.

  Kill these worthless fucks before they even get to our border.

• I want all Muslims and Hindus to go back as well. And while we are at it send all ghetto blacks with those poop dangle spider dread hair cuts.

• We should probably start hacking one of their arms off with machetes before we deport them so we know if they come back.

• I’d like to get rid of around 6 million tbh.

  • A note from Jen: there is no question that this is a reference to the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust. “6MWE” is a well-known message in this community - it stands for “6 Million Wasn’t Enough” - and the discussion about 6 million not being enough continues in this thread.

They also have a lot of difficulty with numbers. Estimates are that there are 10-11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. The U.S. population is around 340 million. Are the comments below wildly overestimating undocumented immigrants? Do they just want all immigrants (and natural born U.S. citizens related to them) to go? Are they very very bad at math?

• Good. Only 70 million more to go.

  The real number of illegals is closer to 80 million. Not including their spawn.

• Good start. About 100 million to go.

• Another 30M+ to go

• Only 38 million to go.

• They say there are like 20-30 million invaders here, when the official number comes out it is going to be closer to 80 million.

• I was figuring about 30-40 million illegals here, that is still 10% of the entire population of this country and way to many.

  Kick them all out

There are many similar threads celebrating the deportation efforts and honestly, the conversation is about the same level in every discussion, including on other topics. They complain about voter fraud, celebrate Texas trying to redistrict while criticizing Democrats for possibly responding, claim any anti-Trump demonstrators are paid actors, and on and on. It’s all bad faith engagement with the issues which would be dismissible except that it’s related to actual policy.
