(In case you missed it, I had a piece in HuffPost this week about being shot at by police while covering the LA protests.)
MAGA influencers and legislators are largely backing Trump’s bombing of Iran, spouting some very Bush-era justifications mixed with cult of personality-style commentary (J.D. Vance said the difference between past Presidents involvement in the Middle East and now is “back then, we had dumb presidents. Now we have a president who knows how to accomplish America's national security objectives.”)
But the MAGA rank and file have come out heavily against the bombing. While they often follow Trump’s whims in their feelings about policy, the community is generally quite committed to “America First”, an isolationist idea that we should withdraw almost entirely from the world community and spend all our money domestically. They have no love for Iran - or anyone - but they do not think it is our business to be involved.
This is pretty representative of the discussion.
At this point, this admin is beginning to look like the George W. Bush admin. Endless regime change wars, completely beholden to Israel, etc. Enough of the neocon endless wars/nation building BULLSHIT. AMERICA FIRST. Fuck Iran, fuck the Middle East, fuck Israel. When this escalates, Americans are going to be drafted to fight for one sand country we don’t give a shit about against another sand country that we also don’t give a shit about. Where are the mass deportations??? Focus on those and not neocon warmongering that Lindsey Graham and Cheney are jerking off to right now.
That said, it is still hard for them to totally turn against Trump on the issue. Here’s a brief exchange that’s fairly representative.
His entire history on foreign policy has been extremely consistent. Less troops and involvement in wars, but also very tactical and concentrated strikes when Trump decides it's necessary. So, until we see troops deployed in mass, then sit back and trust trump
at this point, i might as well just enjoy the ride. we aren’t going to my preferred place, but the guy driving says we are going somewhere better. so i guess we’ll see.
Exactly, trust the plan. Q has got this
That's the most sane thing I've heard tbh and it's the one that will make me less crazy and worried about the situation. Still, we were lied to. Ill continue to feel lied to unless they show some sort of hard proof that Iran was building a nuke. Good luck with that. We couldn't even come up with a fake WMD.
Yes!!! God bless you, patriot! And please know that if we do get to that terrible place where it requires an endless war, WE will say “you were right” to you and will join you to push our driver to correct course immediately!
But that time is not now — we are keeping Americans SAFE and distinguishing ourselves from the Bush era through that safety and RESULTS. SUPPORT THE DRIVER TO THE FINISH LINE WITH ZERO CASUALTIES AND ZERO WARS!
You know what really has proven to keep Americans safe?
Continuously fucking with those goatfuckers over there nonstop. It really makes them love us.
Yep. And it definitely does not make even more people hate us at all!
The sky is not falling, chicken little.
Bring me this faggot's head on a pike!
Those who support the strikes are generally pro-Israel, and that has surfaced some anti-Semitism alongside anti-Israeli sentiment. In fact, there’s a whole separate thread called “FUCK ISRAEL”.
There has also been something we rarely see on these forums: straight up fact checking! Consider this exchange, which is one of many such points:
Bummer. I really hoped that he would have stayed out of this shit
Iran literally said they were going to keep enriching weapons grade uranium no matter what. There was no staying out of it at that point.
Why are you lying? That is not what they said.
In a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Pezeshkian stated that while Iran is open to dialogue and cooperation to build international confidence in its nuclear program, it categorically rejects any demand to completely dismantle its activities. “We are ready to discuss and cooperate to build confidence in the field of peaceful nuclear activities,” he said, “however, we do not agree to reduce nuclear activities to zero under any circumstances,” AFP reported, citing Iran’s official IRNA news agency.
There’s also some reflection on what it means to be MAGA.
Who's supporting Trump here and who isn't? That's what makes one welcome here.
This site is about making America great again. Trump is temporary, patriotism is eternal. I don't give an absolute rats ass about all these countries or people. Drop bombs on the Mexican border, not Iran.
MAGA was always Trump, and Trump has always says Iran can't get a nuke. If the left steals the word and redefines it as they did with woman and racism and whatever else, you'll start letting leftists in here? Maybe you just don't belong where you think you do.
What makes America great can be debatable. What makes America great "by way of Trump" is not. And he's been clear as f**ck about his views on the American interest in preventing a nuclear Iran and the impossibility of getting them to the table, given how American deterrence has been diluted with Biden and has to be reestablished somehow for the good of all other American negotiations to happen in peace.
I trust his judgement.
You thought.
Nah bro, we aren't retarded left wingers. I voted for Trump because I'm a white supremacist who wants foreigners like you the fuck out of my country. As soon as he stops doing that, Trump can fuck off.
So overall, the community is really unhappy with this, but sticking by their guy. We’ll see if that lasts if gas prices skyrocket as predicted with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
More to come.
